Gideon’s Lighthouse is a not-for-profit corporation established in Florida to meet the housing needs of its residents. Working with the government, and other institutions, we hope to provide safe and affordable housing for families statewide. Gideon’s Lighthouse believes that in order to build sustainable communities, a community knowledge base must be developed. This institutional knowledge must cover concepts of the responsibilities of home ownership, financial life skills and civic duties. Over the longer term this institutional knowledge base can become ingrained into the community. Gideon’s Lighthouse approaches housing from a total cost of ownership concept. Gone are the days where the mortgage is the primary obstacle to home ownership. High energy and insurance costs can erode the ability of low to moderate income households to maintain financial viability. Gideon’s Lighthouse believes it can combat these corrosive factors through targeted weatherization and hurricane hardening programs. Finally, sustainable communities are only possible on a sustainable planet. Therefore, Gideon’s Lighthouse promotes the use of GREEN technologies, where economical, to promote efficiency, in a world where carbon neutrality is a critical long term goal. |
